Britten and Caldiero shimmied a distance on two hanging rings: while grabbing on to two chains, they had to pump their arms up and down to move the disc attached to the rings.
Doorknob Grasper
The competitors had to swing themselves from doorknob to doorknob, up a small incline and back down. The biggest obstacle in this challenge is maintaining grip strength — the doorknobs twist so it’s difficult to hang on.
The Floating Boards
The competitors shimmied between four boards hanging from the scaffolding, gripping them with their hands and feet.
The Cliffhanger
It’s legendary for its brutality in all seasons of American Ninja Warrior. The competitors traversed a series of ledges, some only three centimeters wide, only to dismount and jump onto a two-foot ledge to then jump to …
The Pole Grasper
The competitors then used their hands and feet to cross five suspended poles — the fourth dropped down before they could transition to the next obstacle.
The Hang Climb
The Hang Climb is a rock climber’s dream — if you’re able to make it that far. The competitors climbed up a 15-degree incline to reach the top, only to reach back down to transition to Area 51.
Area 51
The competitors navigated a series of suspended flying saucers, using their arms and legs to cross to the final resting bar.
The Flying Bar
A hybrid of two obstacles before it (the Jumping Bars and Pipe Slider), the Flying Bar was the final obstacle for American Ninja Warriors to beat. The competitors jumped from one rung to another while holding onto a pipe. Caldiero became the first-ever American Ninja Warrior to clear the Flying Bar, and Britten was the second.
Mount Midoriyama
The final challenge in the American Ninja Warrior course was Mount Midoriyama, the 75 foot-tall rope to be climbed in less than 30 seconds. Britten climbed it in 29.65 seconds, and Caldiero climbed it in 26.14 seconds.
