    Gust Keros Opens a Hot Dog Pushcart in Detroit
    Constantine "Gust" Keros, an immigrant from Greece, launches a pushcart on the corner of Michigan and Lafayette in downtown Detroit. At the stand he peddles hot dogs and chili alongside shoe shining and hat cleaning services. The chili eventually made it on the hot dog and thus the "coney" was born.

    American Coney Island Debuts
    Done with his pushcart, Gust moves his hot dog business into a shop located next to United Shirt.

    Gust's Brother Opens Lafayette Coney Island
    Gust's brother William "Bill" Keros worked at American before founding his own restaurant right next door. Dubbed Lafayette Coney Island, Bill's diner features a different coney recipe. The owners later gave the restaurant to the employees. The dueling coney islands — American and Lafayette — continue to face-off in a friendly rivalry.

    Charles Keros Takes Over American Coney Island
    Charles Keros inherits the business from his father, Gust. Charles would be influential in helping the diner expand into is iconic triangle shape.

    Ketchup Arrives at American
    According to a USA Today interview with current owner Grace Keros, ketchup wasn't even offered as a condiment at American Coney Island until the 1980s — and only for fries, of course.
  • 1988
    American Coney Island Expands
    In an historic move, the owners of American Coney Island buy the building next door — formerly United Shirt — and expand into the flat iron-style, "apple pie" point of the building.
  • 1990
    Grace Keros Inherits American Coney Island
    Current owner Grace Keros is the daughter of Charles Keros and a third-generation owner. Her brother, Chris Sotiropoulos, joins the business in 2011.
  • 1997
    Coney Kits Go On Sale
    American Coney Island launched the kits as a fundraising tool. The boxes, which feature all the fixins required for the original coney recipe, ship across the country.

    Coney Eating Challenge Launches
    Now an annual fundraiser, the current 2016 record is held by Matt Holowicki of Plymouth who consumed a whopping 20 coneys in 10 minutes.

    American Coney Island Expands to the Detroit Zoo
    Located across from the Rackham Fountain, the 1,200-square-foot restaurant is the only other American Coney Island outpost in Michigan.

    American Coney Island Opens in Las Vegas
    American Coney Island exports the coney dog West to the Detroit-themed D Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. It's the first American Coney Island location outside of Michigan.
