Union Square Donuts opens inside Kitchen Inc.
On Valentine's Day, Union Square Donuts — a collaboration between Josh Danoff (Culinary Cruisers/Ocean Ave Pops) and Heather Schmidt (City Chicks) — opened its first retail location inside of Kitchen Inc., a shared cooking space on the edge of Union Square. The starting lineup of flavors included maple bacon, hibiscus rose, orange ginger cream, and more, as well as dulce de leche cinnamon buns. In the early days, the shop was open only from Friday through Sunday.

Union Square Donuts moves to 16 Bow St.
After just a few months at Kitchen Inc., Union Square Donuts moved across the square to share Cafe Tango's space, offering up more space, more doughnuts, and more hours. It was around this time that the little doughnut shop began racking up tons of press, both locally and nationally. Shop hours increased over time, and meanwhile, the team continued to appear at farmers' markets all around the Boston area, which it had been doing since the very beginning.

Union Square Donuts adds a vegan doughnut to the roster
With plans for a larger, non-shared space in motion, Union Square Donuts debuted a vegan doughnut, originally only available on Saturdays. The yeast-raised doughnut was made with coconut oil and coconut milk, and flavors varied depending on the week. Later, in January 2015, the shop — in a bigger space by then — permanently added vegan doughnuts to the lineup, with two varieties always available (a cinnamon sugar doughnut and a seasonal glazed selection).

USD Brings Doughies to Johnny Cupcakes
No, Newbury Street clothing store Johnny Cupcakes doesn't sell cupcakes. But starting in mid-May 2016, it will at least sell one kind of baked good — "doughies" from Union Square Donuts, thanks to a partnership announced in April 2016. The brioche doughnut dough balls are covered in glaze and sprinkles.
