    Despite having the ninth-best odds and just a 1.7 percent chance of winning the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, the Bulls miraculously jump into the top spot. Now the team has the chance to draft Rose, its homegrown star, or Kansas State scorer Michael Beasley.

    Bulls draft Rose with No. 1 pick
    The Bulls select Rose with their first No. 1 overall pick since Elton Brand in 1999. Rose says afterwards that playing in his hometown will be a "dream come true," and then-GM John Paxson tells reporters the point guard is a "perfect fit" for the team.

    Rose turns heads in amazing playoff debut
    Rose's first playoff series in Chicago is a real sign of greatness. Facing the defending champion Celtics, Rose records 36 points and 11 assists in a Game 1 victory, then keeps battling throughout the series as Chicago pushes Boston to seven games. Paul Pierce, KG and company eventually prevail, but Rose shows he's ready to take his game to another level.

    Rose wins Rookie of the Year
    Rose is the easy pick for the 2009 Rookie of the Year award after averaging 16.8 points and 6.3 assists per game in his debut season. The point guard receives 111 first-place votes, easily outpacing then-Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo, who earns five-first place votes.

    Rose makes 1st NBA All-Star Game
    Rose makes the Eastern Conference All-Star team in his second professional season, becoming the first Bulls player to make the All-Star Game since Michael Jordan in 1998. He records eight points, four assists and three steals as the East rolls to a 141-139 victory.

    Rose torches Spurs for 42
    With Rose rising to MVP status during his third season, the Bulls host the Spurs for a mid-February matchup. San Antonio enters the game with a 46-9 record, but Rose torches the team for 42 points on 18-of-28 shooting in a 109-99 victory. It's one of Rose's greatest regular season performances.

    Rose named youngest MVP in NBA history
    At just 22 years old, Rose is named the NBA MVP after averaging 25 points and 7.7 assists per game while leading the Bulls to a No. 1 seed in the East. He collects 113 of a possible 121 first-place votes, easily topping a field that includes Dwight Howard, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant.

    Rose leads Bulls to East Finals
    The top-seeded Bulls run through the Pacers and Hawks in the first two rounds of the playoffs before meeting LeBron James' Heat in the East Finals. Chicago wins Game 1 by 21 points, but the wheels come off from there as Miami rolls to a 4-1 series win. This is the deepest Rose and the Bulls will ever get in the postseason together.

    Rose signs max extension with Bulls
    In a move that's viewed as a complete no-brainer for Chicago, the team signs Rose to a five-year, $95 million max contract extension before the start of the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season. Thanks to the "Derrick Rose Rule" he gets 30 percent of the team's salary cap as an MVP winner. "I don't think you can put a ceiling on what Derrick can become," GM Gar Forman says at the press conference announcing the deal. "It's scary to think that I think he'll continue to get better and better throughout his career."

    Nagging injuries limit Rose's playing time
    The Bulls continue thriving in the East, but the big question for the team throughout the second half of the season is Rose's health. He ends up missing 27 of 66 regular-season games due to a variety of injuries.

    Rose tears ACL
    The fateful day where the decline truly starts. With the Bulls closing out Game 1 against the 76ers in the first round of the playoffs, Rose lands awkwardly after driving to the basket and collapses to the ground. The team later reveals he's suffered a torn ACL and will be sidelined for the foreseeable future.

    After over a year of hype, including a massive advertising campaign by adidas titled "The Return," Rose returns to the floor with 12 points and four assists in a loss to the Heat.

    Rose tears meniscus
    Just 10 games into his return, Rose suffers another catastrophic knee injury in a game against the Trail Blazers. It's not another torn ACL, but the team later reveals he's undergone surgery for a torn meniscus and will miss the rest of the season. Over the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, while earning salaries totaling over $33 million, Rose misses 154 of 164 possible games.

    This time Rose's return to the court doesn't come with nearly as much fanfare. The city's relationship with Rose has become frayed after years of disappointment and from the moment he steps on the court it's clear he no longer is the same player who won MVP just three years prior. Rose plays in just five of the Bulls' first 13 games and 51 games overall during the season, showing he may be healthier but he's still quite fragile.

    Rose tears his meniscus again
    For the second time in 15 months, Rose tears the meniscus in his right knee and requires surgery. "There's the old saying that surgery's minor as long as it's on somebody else," Gar Forman says at the time. "But in this case, in comparison to what Derrick's had to go through the last several years, this surgery really was minor."

    Indeed, the Bulls are correct that Rose's latest knee injury isn't quite as bad as the others. The point guard returns to the court less than six weeks after undergoing surgery, missing just 20 games. After easing back into action at the end of the regular season, he averages 20.3 points, 6.5 assists and 4.8 rebounds in 12 playoff games as Chicago reaches the second round.

    Bulls miss playoffs, Rose shut down again
    The final year of Rose's tenure in Chicago ends in a thud. The flailing Bulls miss the playoffs despite the All-Star performance of Jimmy Butler. Rose is shut down for the final two games of the season as the team is already eliminated. He averages 16.4 points and 4.7 assists in 66 games, his most since playing 81 during his MVP season in 2010-11.

    Bulls trade Rose to Knicks
    And finally, the end. Rose, Justin Holiday and a 2017 second-round pick are traded to the Knicks in exchange for Robin Lopez, Jerian Grant and Jose Calderon. "Everyone knows him as the local kid who became MVP for his hometown team, but not everyone got to know him like I did," Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf says in a statement after the deal is announced. "While he is a terrific basketball player, he is an even better person with a tremendous heart."
